Iterating through my idea has been very interesting as I get feedback from customers, investors, and peers. Listening, pivoting, and adjusting are critical to success.
After taking a year long break from trying to launch a comprehensive neighborhood matching site (think match.com for people looking for the right neighborhood to live) along with a proximity based classifieds mash-up I applied to the Founder Institute over this past summer and was accepted! Oh and a bit of advice.. focus on one idea and do a ton of market research and build your minimum viable product as cheap as possible.
The program has been fantastic to say the least in terms of networking, mentoring, and the actual practical sessions where we apply the lessons to building our companies. This has lead me back to ThinqTeq and my vision of applying the wonders of technology to solving real life challenges and at the same time innovating our way out of this economy. Our first product, ZoomCal will be a result of my attempts to jam my schedule everyday with meetings, errands, work, etc.. and as a result this it has caused me to miss many dentists and doctors appointments. This lead me to swap appointments with my wife or kids for the dentists or worse I paid cancellations fees. I thought why can't I find someone else to take my appointment? If I paid half the cancellation fee as an incentive would someone take the appointment? Is there a market for my appointment if I cannot make it? My doctor is pretty damn good and there is a 6 month waiting list.. HMM... Well apparently this has resonated with the dental and healthcare industries. One dentists I interviewed said even with appointment reminders his cancellations and no-shows are 10%.
